Today, we’re happy to introduce the official postcard for the World Postcard Day event! It’s the winning postcard in a design competition that Postcrossing run together with Finepaper, a neat printing and design company based in Lisbon.
One of the goals of the initiative was to introduce postcards to a young generation of designers, so the students were taught about the postcard format, types of paper as well as possible printing techniques, before going about imagining a postcard that would represent the World Postcard Day. The submissions poured in throughout July, after which the juries had the difficult task of picking just one winner. And now, without any further ado, I give you the selected design!
Isn’t it super cute? 😍 The chosen postcard was designed by Leandro Ferreira, a 3rd year student of Design & Multimedia at Universidade da Beira Interior. Congratulations, Leandro — the coveted Pantone catalogue is yours! If you’re curious about the other submissions, you can see some of them on the contest page (Portuguese-only, sorry!). This year’s competition was mostly a small scale trial run, which we plan to expand to other countries next year, doing it earlier in the year as well.
If you’d like, you can download a high resolution version of this postcard (front and back) to print on a local printing shop or online service (like Vistaprint or MOO) — the files and details are available on the World Postcard Day page. If you use it or receive it, do share it online with the hashtag #WorldPostcardDay! We’d love to see this postcard reach all corners of the world.
In other exciting news, the Portuguese Post (CTT) has created a special cancellation mark with the World Postcard Day logo to celebrate the day! We’re very excited about it and planning to use it on all the postcards we write on October 1st! If you’d like to receive the official World Postcard Day postcard from the “headquarters” with the special cancellation mark, leave a comment below — we’ll randomly pick a few postcrossers to be the lucky recipients of these postcards, written by us on the day! 😊

A special postcard from the neighbour country would be really nice! Thank to this community of Postcrossing I could restart my proyect of sending mail to the most countries as possible, inicially only with my foreign friends.

Hello! since I am a beginner postcrosser and I would really like to receive this postcard. in such a short period of time, I learned so much interesting and new for myself when I signed postcards and received from other countries. it is very interesting to receive postcards by vish. I found many friends in the A5 format or by correspondence. this is honestly a thrill or adrenaline that will come to you today! I decided not to stop there, I went to the drawing course as my last lesson was in the 5th grade. Even if I'm not lucky, it's still very cool to have pen pals all over the world !!!

As a life-long postcard and stamp collector I would be thrilled and honoured to receive this year's World Postcard Day postcard with stamp.
I was introduced to postcards in the 1960s by my distant grandfather who regularly wrote histories and stories on postcards through my childhood and into adulthood (until his death).
My father had a small stamp and coin business until his death, so stamps are also glued onto my life!
Wonderful! Thank you for making the file available. I am having quite a few printed. As soon as they arrive, every postcard that I send will be a World Postcard Day postcard. I plan on canvassing the whole world with them. I am really looking forward to it.

I have arranged with my principal that I can organize a writing session (corona-proof, of course) for our students during a lunch break. I have ordered 500 postcards to be written to random people or that we will post to several refugee centres in our country. It would be nice if I could also get a card from you ;)
We are going to send a postcard to our main Post Office (where I buy all my picture stamps), smaller Sub Post Office (who hand cancel all my cards) and our local Postal Sorting Office. We will explain what World Post Card Day is all about. (We just ordered some cards and stickers from the lovely Papersisters)

Just got a bunch of "official" World Postcard Day postcards printed and posted them too. Hope they reach their recipients ( including you nice folks at Postcrossing HQ ) by 1st October. In addition to this I have also sent another special postcard to the Postcrossing HQ.

Postcards are the perfect media from personal to political. Go this humble "olive branch" in a divisive world. Found out that USA no longer issues IRC's so would be thrilled to receive one with the commemorative stamp. BTW, glancing through the previous comments is quite enlightening!

I think all this is just amazing! This initiative simply combines the old-fashioned charm of a postcard with modernity. The allure of sending and receiving a postcard is still alive, untouched. The power of sending a smile and a thought to a person far away in the world is stunning: no matter how powerful and fast our communication means are nowadays, a postcard tangibly carries art, words and a piece of the sender's soul, just for the receiver.
This design is so fresh and young, perfect to express this concept!
I realized that my way of writing postcards, decorating them, choosing stamps has changed since when I joined Postcrossing, as I get to know more and more ways to express myself in such a tiny space... but the love and care I put in each and every postcard is the same as when I was a little girl on holiday.
