At least once a year, postcrossers from Mumbai in India get together to celebrate their hobby and send some postcards. Last year, the Little Mail Carriers’ cousin was invited by Amit Surana (aka indianfriendszone) to tag along and discover his beautiful country. Here’s his report of the trip:

Hi everyone! It’s been a while… I hope you’re doing well!

Man… it sure feels good to get out of that envelope! :) Ooooh… and what do we have here?

Well hello ladies! Nice to meet you! Are you all coming to the Postcrossing meetup as well?

The local postcrossers are celebrating a special quirky date: 11/12/13! This sequential date only happens once every 100 years – how cool is that?

We met at Starbucks, and then moved to the General Post Office, who made a room available for us to share and write our postcards in a quiet environment. That was very nice of them!

A great crowd turned up, and it was really nice to meet everyone in person! And the postcards were really nice too – some where even especially designed for this event:

By the way, the building of the Mumbai General Post Office is stunning – one of the largest post office buildings in the world with 101 counters and 11,000 square meters of area. As you can imagine, it handles massive quantities of mail everyday! Do pay it a visit if you’re around…

… you might even get to meet a friendly postman, like I did!

After the meeting, I stayed in Mumbai for some time, and got to do some sightseeing with Amit, and learn a bit more about the biggest city in India. Mumbai is amazing: everywhere you look, there’s a piece of history waiting to be discovered.

We stopped at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (also known as Victoria Terminus), built in 1887 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. It’s made in the Victorian Gothic Revival style blended with traditional Indian architecture – and so remarkable that it earned UNESCO recognition.

Mumbai is also known for the Bollywood industry, which is based here in the city. We went to see one of these movies, and the songs were stuck in my head for hours afterwards… I even learned a dance move or two! I didn’t understand much of the story since everyone spoke Hindi… except now and then, when the characters would speak in English for a sentence or two! Amit explained that this is called Hinglish and it’s a mixture of the two languages.

I also got a chance to see the magnificent Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and the Leopold Café nearby. This was a solemn moment in my trip, as I remembered the many people who died or were wounded here during the November 2008 terrorist attack.

After that I was feeling contemplative… Since Mumbai lays by the sea, this was the perfect occasion to take a stroll on the beach, and dip my feet in the Arabian Sea while watching the sunset. Chowpatty beach is one of the most famous in Mumbai. It’s here that people come to try the local delicacies or just relax at the end of a long day. There were monkeys dancing, snake-charmers and even fortune tellers!

A short walk from the beach was Kamala Nehru Park, which features…

… a boot house! Isn’t that amazing? Who wouldn’t want to live in a boot? It’s inspired in the nursery rhyme There was an old woman who lived in a shoe – though I didn’t find any old women there, only happy children!

On my last days in town, there was another Postcrossing meeting, where we visited the Elephanta caves, a famous UNESCO heritage site on an island 10km from the coast of Mumbai. The caves have a series of sculptures, from the 5th and 6th centuries, depicting the cult of Shiva. They’re amazing! I felt even smaller than usual next to them…

Glad I wasn’t alone! There were a lot of friendly postcrossers there with me :)

I had an wonderful time in India with Amit and all the postcrossers, but now it’s time to go! Into the mailbox I go… who knows where I’ll pop out! :)

Good news! We’ve just received another adventure-filled missive from the Little Mail Carriers… all the way from Ålesund, a coastal town in Norway! Their host Cathrine (aka Norway_girl) showed them all the best sights in town, including the wonderful aquarium, where they got to meet the cuddle-loving wolffishes!

Hello everyone! Earlier this year, we were in Ålesund, Norway. It is called the The Art Nouveau City, as the city was built up in Art Nouveau style after a fire on January 23, 1904.

On our first day, we were taken for a walk at Sunnmøre Museum. Everyone can walk around among the old buildings for free. It was so interesting to see those old wooden houses with grass on the roof!

The original settlement in the area was built 12000 years ago and lasted until the Viking age, about 1000 years ago. In the main building, there were many interesting exhibitions about things like how yarn was colored in the old days, folk costumes, old rooms, tools for typical crafts… It was fascinating!

We did also find a perfect place to watch the mountains. Being close to the sea and see the snow covered mountain tops at the same time is very nice!

While walking in the forest, we meet a man who was cycling there, so we had to try that ourselves too…but it was harder to bicycle on the forest path than on a road! So we decided to just relax on the the view point, where we could sit on a bench and look at the city and the surrounding islands.

A high point of our stay was the visit to Atlanterhavsparken, one of Northern Europe’s largest salt water aquariums, where we got to see many of the creatures that are found in the North Atlantic Ocean! In addition to that, we did also see some tropical fishes, included clown fishes, turtles and really cute Humboldt penguins, which were being hand-fed at the time of our visit! You can see them running for their grub in this cool video that our host filmed! :)

There’s a huge tank in Atlanterhavsparken, called The Atlantic Tank…

… which contains 4 million liters of water and several hundred big fishes of 11 species that live in the North Atlantic Ocean (for instance cod, saithe and wolffish). Every day, a scuba diver hand feeds the fishes in the Atlantic Tank. That was so cool to watch! We were told that the wolffishes are the kindest fishes in the tank… they like to be cuddled! :D

We did also get time to write some postcards, and walked through the city town in search for a mailbox… Oh, here they are! A yellow one for mail to nearby places, and a red one for the rest of the mail!

Then we visited Jugendstilsenteret (The Art Nouveau Style Centre), which tells about the Ålesund fire and the rebuilding of the city. There’s even a time machine there, where we could travel back in time to 1904, to see what the city looked like before the devastating fire.

During our stay, we learned that Norwegians love to be outside, in the nature – so we decided to do like them, and go for a walk at the city mountain Aksla. What a view we got of the city and the surrounding islands!

And what about Norwegian food? Well, we discovered that Norwegians love their bread!. They eat so much bread… for breakfast, lunch and evening meal! And if you’re ever in Norway, remember not to put a second slice of bread on top of the first one – that’s a big no-no!

Here in Norway, they’ve got a brown cheese, a sweet cheese, and they’ve even got a weird device for slicing it! We also got to taste kjøttkaker (meatballs, on the left) and lefse (a soft flatbread, on the right). They were delicious! :D

We were wondering what the Little Mail Carriers had been up to lately, when we received this exciting missive all the way from Idaho! Their host lydacher did a thorough job of spoiling the little guys with splendid views and lots of fun activities! If there was any doubt that the Little Mail Carriers have all the fun…

Hello everyone! Late last year we traveled to Idaho, the U.S. state famous for its extensive wilderness areas, winter sports, and… potatoes.

When we arrived, our mail carrier, Jason, drove us in his truck to Old Town Pocatello. Then he walked us up a hill to our host’s house.

Our host Cheryl (aka lydacher) was in the midst of holiday preparations, so we jumped right in to help! The biscotti were divine – but diving in the chocolate chips was one of our favorite parts…

We were welcomed by the dollhouse family and shown to the guest room. As mail carriers, we had no trouble making friends with the family dog.

The next morning, we ventured out into the snow. We’d brought our bicycle, but the snow was too deep, so the dollhouse family loaned us their 4-wheeler.

Wheeeeeee!

Oops! Ouch… Are you ok, Little Paulo? Maybe that’s enough snow for one day…

While we dried our clothes and took a rest, our host gave us some facts about Idaho, which has only 1.5 million people living in an area of 219,887 square kilometres. Much of that area is designated wilderness, where motorized travel is prohibited. Idaho has more miles of rivers than any of the other contiguous U.S. states and several mountain ranges that include at least 9 peaks that are more than 12,000 feet (3.6576 kilometres) above sea level.

To take a break from all the snow, we warmed up in Lava Hot Springs, a short drive out of the city. These pools are fed by natural underground hot springs and are most popular during the winter, when the freezing air meets the 110° Fahrenheit (or 43° Celsius) water and creates an outdoor sauna.

The next morning, we looked through our host’s postcard collection, which she keeps in notebooks and special boxes, filed by country and theme. We learned that she has taught classes about Postcrossing through New Knowledge Adventures, a continuing education program offered by Idaho State University.

She makes children’s mobiles from some of the colorful postcards she receives, and she also made a platform for an electric train for us to ride with our Lego friends – complete with scenic postcards that reflect the views we should see from a real train. How cool is that?! :D

We helped our host select postcards to send and accompanied her to the post office. Postman Rocky sold us stamps and weighed us on his postage scale. Rocky told us that we weigh about the same as a first-class letter!

Bidding Rocky goodbye, we drove back toward the hills on the west side of the city. We’d taken our bicycle along to do some trail-biking… but instead we just sat on a split-rail fence, watching the trains in the valley below us.

The view was just breathtaking!

During the week, we also visited some museums that are uniquely Idaho. The Museum of Natural History at Idaho State University features an exhibit of prehistoric whorl-tooth shark (Helicoprion) fossils found in Idaho.

Idaho is sometimes called the “Potato State, ” owing to its popular and widely-distributed crop. The Idaho Candy Company makes an “Idaho Spud” candy bar that resembles a potato, and there’s even a Potato Museum that houses the world’s largest potato crisp!

We were invited to some holiday parties where we were welcomed by friends of all ages and got to hang out in the decorations!

And of course, we met some Idaho cats. This photo is for all those postcrossers who love cat postcards! :)

Year 2013 is over, and it’s time to bid our host goodbye… Happy New Year 2014 from Idaho!

While the Little Mail Carrier’s jet set around at undisclosed locations, their cousin has been busy attending meetups and getting to know postcrossers from all over the world! :) Here’s a brief recap of the last few months on his tour:

Hello everyone! This past August, I was in sunny Helsinki, meeting lots of nice European postcrossers! We did a fun scavenger hunt around the city, found lots of Moomins and Angry Birds, tried some Finnish delicacies and hopped on a ferry to beautiful Suommelinna island. I really wanted to see the inside of a Posti postbox, and managed to get myself stuck in the process… children, please don’t try this at home!

I then jumped on a plane and landed in Baltimore, which was super exciting! We’re all big fans of The Wire and Hairspray at the Postcrossing HQ – so I felt right at home :) Cspt organised a wonderful meetup at Stone Mill Bakery Café. It was a lot of fun to meet new postcrossers from the other side of the pond… and the cookies were delicious! :D

After that, I took the boat back home, as it was time for another Bielefeld meetup! I knew a lot of the people there already, from past meetups, so it was nice to see them all again! As usual, I’ve dived into pools of candy, signed lots of postcards, and marvelled at the beauty of Autumn in North-Rhine Westphalia… but this year I also got to greet the postman, greeted the animals at the delightful Olderdissen Animal Park and visited Modern Times, a local postcard distributor who gave a special tour just for postcrossers!

It’s been a blast! :)

I must confess that our jaws dropped when we received this report… as if Paris wasn’t stunning enough, Petitpilote managed to take the little ones on her flights with her, show them around the biggest airplane in the world and visit another 2 cities in the US!! Read on, for another adventure-filled report! :)

So if you’ve read our previous report, you know we were about to board a plane with our host Petitpilote, who is an air hostess on long haul flights.

July was her stand-by duty month so she could fly anywhere and the destinations would all be surprises both for her and for us! What a great experience! We always travel into envelopes and this time, we have flown inside a plane and seen the world around! And the first destination was…

… Boston, charming city of the USA!

Largest city and capital of Massachusetts, Boston was founded in 1630 and is one of the oldest towns of the United States. With many colleges and universities, the city is an international hub of education and a major cultural center as well. This is from the balcony of the Old State House in Boston that Thomas Jefferson read the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

The stopover was very short and by happy chance the hotel located downtown, convenient for a quick sightseeing around. We walked through the Little Italy district and then straight to the Marina to enjoy the waterfront atmosphere.

Weather was fair, lots of little boats were preparing for some sea trip. Looking through the spyglass, we have imagined incredible buccaneers and pirate adventures!

The second destination was Washington D.C.! The capital of the USA!

We were fortunate to fly into the big Airbus A380. Woooow… A double-deck airliner, the biggest plane in the world with 24 crew members and 516 passengers! And two little free-riders of course! :D

The Captain invited us to join the cockpit during the flight; we could sit on the instruments panel and experience interesting moments and a beautiful balcony view.

And while the ocean was evaporating at high speed under our wings, our host and his colleagues were ensuring the comfort and safety of passengers in the cabin.

Washington, here we are! No time to have some rest. Our host had again a busy schedule for us! For the first step, we have visited the National Postal Museum!

Dedicated to the postal history of the United States, the Museum offers many interactive displays and a big room with a permanent exhibit “moving the mail”.

On the road, through the rail and airmail, we have explored more than three centuries of postal old days. What a brilliant place! We have met lots of other international postboxes from the past!

There are many American institutions in Washington, such as the White House which is the official residence of the President…

… but also the Capitol where the Congress sits as well as the Supreme Court and other federal agencies.

After a delightful promenade under an agreeable sun, we made some stops in front of these remarkable spots. In the morning, with a head full of unforgettable memories, we left Washington back to France. We can’t wait to join our next adventure! Au revoir and see you soon!
