Q & A

What is Postcrossing?
The Postcrossing project is an online platform that allows anyone to exchange postcards from all over the world — for free.
How did it start?
The project started in 2005 when Paulo Magalhães, a Portuguese computer systems engineer and postcard lover, thought it would be a good idea to connect people who share the love for sending and receiving postcards. You can read more about Postcrossing's history here.
How does Postcrossing work?
In short:
  1. Request an address from the website.
  2. Mail the postcard to the address.
  3. Wait to receive a postcard from another random member.
  4. Register the received postcard in the system.

The first step is to request to send a postcard. The website selects and displays the address of another (random) member and a Postcard ID (e.g, US-8341) that uniquely identifies that postcard in the system. The sender then mails the postcard to that member. When the other member receives the postcard, they will register on the website using the Postcard ID that is on the postcard. At this point, the sender will become eligible to receive a postcard from another random member. For more details, check the About page.

Who are the postcrossers?
Postcrossers are people of all ages and backgrounds, connected by their love for postcards. Since postcards and stamps are available nearly everywhere around the world, Postcrossing can be enjoyed by anyone, from children learning English or geography in their school to their grandmas - and everyone in between. The largest age group of our members is 20-29 years old.
How many postcards have been sent through Postcrossing?
To date, a total of 79,831,889 postcards have been exchanged. For updated numbers about the postcards, check the statistics section.
Which are the most popular countries in Postcrossing?
The countries with the most members and the most sent postcards change over time. For an updated overview, please check out this page. It's possible to sort the information by clicking on the header of each column.
